A structural transformation sequence between metal–organic cages is driven by inverse electron-demand Diels–Alder reactions between tetrazine linkers and alkenes, followed by subsequent oxidation. Like sands that shift over time, the intermediate lantern structures are transient, with the transformations driven by the addition or removal of small amounts of flexibility, respectively.
